Answers, and where to go deeper

These are the questions we hear most across plumbing, heating, and gas, gathered in one place with honest answers. Each topic has a fuller page if you want the detail: repair-versus-replace on a water heater, why a drain keeps backing up, what to do in a plumbing or heating emergency, and how our service and service area work. The answers below are the short version; the linked pages are the long one.

If your question is not covered here, the fastest way to a real answer is to call. Prime Plumbing is a licensed, Woburn-based team, and we would rather give you a straight answer on the phone than have you guess. Call (617) 354-4545.

Repairs & replacements

Repairs, replacements & costs.

The questions homeowners ask most about whether to fix or replace.

Should I repair or replace my water heater?

It comes down to whether the tank is sound. If the steel tank is intact and a component failed, repair is usually the better value, because elements, thermostats, gas valves, anode rods, and relief valves are all replaceable. If the tank is leaking or rusted through from the body, it cannot be repaired and replacement is the honest answer. We diagnose which you have before recommending anything.

Should I repair or replace my boiler or heating system?

Most heating faults are a replaceable part, a relief valve, circulator, zone valve, expansion tank, or control, on a system that can run for decades, so repair is usually right. Replacement becomes the honest call when the core fails, a cracked heat exchanger or leaking boiler sections, or when a system is so old and unreliable that repairing it keeps costing more. We diagnose and tell you straight.

Why does my drain keep backing up in the same spot?

A repeat clog in one place is a symptom, not bad luck: grease built up on the pipe wall, roots at a joint, or a section that has settled and holds standing water. Cabling clears the symptom; a camera finds the cause. In older Greater Boston homes it often means an aging main line worth diagnosing properly rather than clearing on a loop.

How much will a job cost?

It depends on the work, and we confirm the scope before starting rather than surprising you. What moves the number is access, the extent of the problem, and whether a diagnosis shows a repair or something larger. Our approach is to find the actual problem first and explain what the fix involves, so you understand the scope and the reason before any work begins.

Emergencies & gas

Emergencies, gas & safety.

What to do when it cannot wait.

What counts as a plumbing emergency?

A burst pipe, a sewer backup into the house, a water heater that has flooded, or no water at all are emergencies, because water is actively causing damage or the home is without a basic function. Shut off the water at the main or the fixture if you safely can, then call (617) 354-4545. A single slow drain or a dripping faucet, by contrast, can usually wait for a scheduled visit.

My heat went out in freezing weather. Is that an emergency?

Yes. In freezing weather an unheated house is a frozen-pipe risk on top of a cold one, so a no-heat call in a cold snap is genuinely urgent, not something to leave until morning. Check the thermostat and the system's power switch, and if that does not restore heat, call (617) 354-4545. Getting the heat back protects the plumbing as well as your comfort.

What should I do if I smell gas?

Leave the building immediately without using any switch, phone, or flame, since any spark is the risk. Get everyone out, and from outside, call your gas utility, which responds around the clock and will make the property safe. Do not try to find the leak yourself. Once the area is confirmed safe, a licensed technician can locate and repair the leak and pressure-test the line.

Do you handle gas work, and is it licensed?

Yes. We perform gas piping and gas appliance work to the Massachusetts state code, 248 CMR, by licensed technicians, with the permits pulled and the work inspected. Gas is the one system where a shortcut is a genuine safety risk, which is exactly why the state requires licensed, permitted, inspected work, and why we do it that way.

About our service

Our service & area.

How we work and where.

What areas do you serve?

Woburn, where we are based, and the Greater Boston area, from our nearby neighbors like Burlington and Winchester to the cities closer to Boston such as Cambridge, Somerville, and Newton. Our service areas page lists the communities we cover, and if your town is nearby and not listed, it is worth a call, because our coverage is broader than the featured towns alone.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes. Prime Plumbing is licensed and insured and holds Massachusetts license #17347, and we perform gas work to the state code, 248 CMR, with the required permits and inspections. Hiring a licensed plumber means the work is done to standard and comes with the documentation that matters when you sell a home or file an insurance claim.

Do you handle both homes and businesses?

Yes. We handle the full range of residential plumbing, heating, and gas, and commercial work for restaurants, property-management portfolios, and multi-family buildings, with commercial jobs scheduled around your operations so a plumbing problem does not become a closed day. It is one licensed team for both.

How do you decide between a repair and a replacement?

By diagnosing the actual problem first, then giving you the honest call. A great deal of our work is telling customers the cheaper answer, that a part will fix it rather than a whole new unit, and recommending replacement only when it genuinely is the better value. We explain plainly what we find rather than presenting a bill, because we would rather earn trust than sell unnecessary work.
