Sizing is where older houses get into trouble
The most common problem we find is not a leak, it is a line that is too small for what is now hooked to it. Every gas appliance pulls a specific load, measured in BTUs, and the pipe from the meter has to carry all of them at once on the coldest night of the year with the boiler running. Add a tankless water heater, a six-burner range, or a standby generator to a line that was sized decades ago for a furnace and a stove, and something starves.
Undersized gas piping shows up as appliances that will not reach temperature, pilot lights that drop out, and burners that burn yellow and soot. So when we add or extend a line, we size it against the whole house's demand, not just the new appliance in front of us. Getting that math right is the difference between an install that works for twenty years and a string of nuisance calls.
